Eric Prydz Almost Changed Dance Music History
The set that almost happened, and how one decision shaped the path of one of dance music's most uncompromising artists.

Most people think Swedish House Mafia was always meant to be three members: Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Steve Angello. But what a lot of dance music fans don't know is that there was almost a fourth member, and his name was Eric Prydz.
"I don't follow trends. I don't listen to what someone else has come up with. I need to, you know, do my own journey and tell my own story with the music I make," Prydz has said.
In the early 2000s, Stockholm was becoming a major hub for dance music. A group of young producers were all coming up at the same time, pushing Swedish electronic music to a global audience. Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Angello, and Eric Prydz were all close friends. "My name is Axwell. This is Steve Angello," goes one old clip of the pair. As Axwell, Sebastian, and Steve grew even closer creatively, the idea of forming a supergroup started to happen naturally. At one point, Swedish House Mafia could have been four members instead of three.
"DJing is a musical thing — putting pieces of music together with all the aspects of tension and rhythm and harmonies and melodies," as one of them put it. But Eric Prydz turned it down. He reportedly said, "I can't abide collaboration, even with close friends." That decision completely shaped his career.
Swedish House Mafia went on to dominate dance music with tracks like "Don't You Worry Child," "Save the World," and "Miami 2 Ibiza." "You can create new things that wasn't there before, just using music tracks like bricks," as one of them put it. Meanwhile, Eric Prydz built his own legacy with "Call on Me," "Pjanoo," "Opus," and "Holo."
For nearly 20 years, fans never got to see all four on stage together. That changed at Ultra Miami 2026. Nobody lost — Swedish House Mafia became legends, and Eric Prydz became a legend on his own. Would Swedish House Mafia have been bigger with Eric Prydz as a fourth member?
