Tomorrowland's Mainstage Fire and the Metallica Save
A fire destroyed Tomorrowland's main stage during final production in 2025, two days before the festival opened. Borrowed equipment from Metallica helped crews build a stripped down replacement overnight, and many attendees said they preferred the smaller setup to the festival's usual productions.

Imagine spending thousands of dollars to fly across the world to Tomorrowland, and two days before your flight, you open up your phone and see the main stage is completely on fire.
Tomorrowland attracts hundreds of thousands of fans from around the world. Its main stage is the centerpiece of the entire festival. These stages take months to design and millions of dollars to build. During the final production push, smoke started rising from the stage. Then flames spread rapidly. Fireworks were reportedly exploding. Sections of the stage had been collapsing. Videos instantly flooded social media. Fans were panicking online. People were asking if the festival was canceled. Others were already boarding international flights while watching the disaster unfold.
Tomorrowland reassured fans that the festival would continue. Behind the scenes, crews scrambled for solutions. Then, while all of the miraculous rebuilding was happening, the wildest twist arrived: Metallica reportedly had compatible production equipment nearby, and it turned out to be exactly what was needed to save the main stage. Tomorrowland reached out, and Metallica helped.
Crews continued working overnight and eventually rebuilt a replacement setup: a leaner stage, more intimate, with artists closer to the ground and more visible to the fans. It was almost like a simple show as opposed to a massive production. The team had almost no time, but somehow the gates opened.
Fans entered not knowing what to expect, but as it turns out, the replacement stage may have been better than the original concept. Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Afrojack, and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike performed all of the classics, and despite everything, the weekend still delivered massive moments. Maybe even more massive because of the miraculous happening. At the end of it all, many fans actually preferred the stripped-back stage. They felt it made the music feel more raw and authentic. They felt like this was what the scene was actually about.
And in the end, a festival that looked completely doomed ended up creating one of the most unforgettable weekends in dance music history. By overcoming the adversity and achieving a miraculous comeback in such a short time, Tomorrowland solidified itself as possibly the best festival in the entire world.
